Techniques to improve your memory and learning

Do you struggle to remember your exam revision? Try these techniques to help improve your memory.

Focus Your Attention

focus

Try to study in a place free of distractions such as television, music, and other diversions.

For information to move from your short-term memory into your long-term memory, you need to focus solely on the task at hand, every time you sit down to study, know what your objective is for that session.

Avoid Cramming

cramming

Cramming doesn’t work (remember short term and long-term memory) Research has continuously shown that students who study regularly remember the material far better than those who do all of their studying in one marathon session.

Sleep

sleep

Sleep is vital for memory and learning. Studies have found that sleeping after learning something new leads to physical changes in the brain, helping you learn faster and remember better.

So the next time you’re struggling to learn new information, consider taking a nap after you study.

Tapas Study

Mix in subjects, mix in old and new material- keep it all fresh!

Research suggests 10% more is retained when you have a bit of topic A and a bit of topic B on the same day rather than just doing a day of A and a day of B.

Read Out Loud

Reading materials out loud significantly improves your memory of the material. As you write, speak your notes out loud or use this approach in your studies by teaching new concepts and information to a friend.
